These men have been working closely with the baboons and have gained a wealth of wildlife experience as well as developing unique relationships with the baboons of the Da Gama and Slangkop troops. Xhosa culture in today’s South Africa can be roughly divided into two main sectors – ezilalini (in the hills) and elokshini (in the location). Both are equally important and reflect the living conditions, cultural values and aspirations of the majority of Xhosa people.

This is a Half-day Introductory Xhosa language Workshop of 3-4 hrs, in which we learn some key Xhosa basics. A fun, interactive day from which the participants emerge with the ability to greet and introduce themselves in Xhosa with confidence.

We will introduce various local musical instruments and explain the importance of music in local everyday life. End the tour with a typical South African “braai” at Mzolis (or similar).

TO8  SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY TOUR – “ Help us to make a difference”

Delegates who choose this tour will have an opportunity to spend the afternoon visiting a community centre in the townships and then to make a lasting difference in the lives of a group of orphaned children.

The conference organisers have teamed up with a local non-government organization Ikamva Labantu to assist with home improvements desperately needed at an orphan home run by a local mother in the Guguletu township. A few remarkable women in the townships offer security and shelter to abandoned children and recieve no government funding. Ikamva Labantu assists some of these mothers with feeding and schooling the abandoned children. The children are also regularly seen by Ikamva Labantu’s nutrisionist to ensure that they are healthy and well nourished.

The attached photographs show the current conditions of the house which is home to 12 children ranging in age from 5 months to 17 years whom Vivian Jobe has taken in and for whom she is caring. Vivian has been doing this work for the past 7 years improving the lives of at least 30 children. .

The goal for ICA 2010 is to fund and assist with building alterations to provide extra space, proper waterproofing, storage and electricity to Vivian’s existing 2 roomed house. The project will be funded jointly by donations from delegates and Ikamva Labantu. We are hoping to complete the structural building work by March 2010. On the day of the Social responsibility tour delegates will have an opportunity to be actively involved in this project by applying the appropriate finishing touches to make a lasting contribution to the lives of the children living with Vivian.
